Curse of Radiance Chapter 7, Episode 4 - Epilogue

Here we are- the end of a long journey.

The party has defeated assassins, a mad red wizard, the acting head of a ruthless mercenary company, the cult of a dead god, and an immortal possessing spirit. They rescued a princess, avoided a war with all dragonkind, fought in an arena before a roaring audience, met heroes of legend, and destroyed a pool of limitless power. They travelled, mentally, back in time to witness wars, steal artifacts, and experience the path to enlightenment. They met friends, lost companions, caused collateral damage, and broke the curse that bound them. Fennec, Benjil, and Ildana have completed their quest- for the first time in a long time, they are free to make a new path for themselves.

Thank you to everyone who came along on this journey with us. It's been a wild ride- plenty of ups and down, even some unapproved side-to-side motion on this roller coaster- and the journey has reached its end.

This isn't the end for me (I'll be back in the coming weeks with further announcements and such), but it's time for a well-earned rest.

Have a good one.

Curse of Radiance Chapter 7, Episode 3 - Tower Defense Mode

We're almost there! The end is almost here! Next week, we'll meet in the middle!

They've done the impossible- Tyranthraxus' physical form, vulnerable only to the Blade of Lathander, has been slain. But before they can breathe a sigh of relief, they are given an urgent reminder that the job is not yet done. Ildana has to spend one minute- ten measly rounds- absorbing the Pool of Radiance into the Gauntlets of Moander. Sounds like no big deal, right? Well, it turns out everything and everyone in Myth Drannor is on their way, eager to steal Tyranthraxus' coveted power for themselves. Can they survive wave after wave of monstrous forces long enough to finish the job?

This episode was a lot of fun. I knew after the fight with Big T that there was one more step of the process, and I had to ask, what would be the best way to go about this? I ran the idea by the players of essentially having a tower defense segment where the rest of the party needs to protect Ildana for ten rounds while she does her thing, and they loved it. (Naturally, I had Chris stat out and play the Nameless Bard so that he wouldn't be stuck sitting on his hands for the whole final battle, but he ended up surprising me in a lot of ways so that was hardly a hindrance for him.) After all was said and done, I'm very happy with the result.

It still doesn't feel real that this podcast is almost over- but at the same time, it's been over for a long time. (Literally and figuratively. We recorded this episode like six months ago.) I hope all of you out there have enjoyed the ride.

So give this episode a listen, and join us next week for the end of the story!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 7, Episode 2 - The Fight with the Big Bad Is Here

Last week we began the final story arc; today, we begin the final encounter. The party has come a long way to get here- fighting a guild of assassins, stopping a mad wizard from waging war against dragonkind, fighting in an arena to get the attention of the leader of an evil city, sending their minds back in time to plumb ancient mysteries, killing a newly-born god- and now that the possessing spirit Tyranthraxus has played his trump card, Elminster's Gambit has paid off and given the party a trump card of their own (if they can figure it out). The fate of everything is riding on this episode, so let's make it a good one!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 7, Episode 1 - The Curse of Radiance

We're here, everyone: the beginning of the final story arc. The party has arrived at the ruined elven capital of Myth Drannor, with two goals: to slay the possessing spirit Tyranthraxus, and to steal the source of his power for the city itself. Along the way they will meet mysterious figures, make sacrifices, and risk everything- but what sort of power does Tyranthraxus hold over them? What will happen when they come face-to-face with this unkillable foe? Will we ever get a name drop of the title of the podcast? Listen and find out!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 6, Episode 7 - Slaying a God Wasn't Enough

Here we are, folks- the end of another story arc. The party has killed an assassin's guild, a mad red wizard, the head of a mercenary company, and now, the cult of a dead god. They have only one more goal before their quest is over: to defeat the immortal possessing spirit, Tyranthraxus, and destroy the source of his power, a Pool of Radiance. So this week, we have the calm before the storm- for the end is near.

It's been a wild ride so far, and I suspect the wildest part is still to come. The final story arc for this podcast isn't going to be quite as long as the others- it was mostly coincidence that they all ended up being seven episodes long, but in this case, scheduling had made it increasingly difficult to get the podcast recorded so we as a group opted to wrap up this coming story arc a little bit faster than the rest. So I hope you enjoy the remaining few episodes as much as the rest!

I just want to throw out a thank you to everyone who's been listening so far- I finished editing these last episodes just a few days ago, and it still hasn't completely set in that this is all going to be over soon. I love this campaign, I love the people who were willing to put their time into helping me make it, and I love you all for listening. I hope you love this podcast.

Thanks to everyone out there, and enjoy the next few episodes!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 6, Episode 6 - Freeman Wanted to Title This Episode "Rude"

Well, it happened. The dead god Moander, the Darkbringer, the Jawed God, the Abomination, "Old Moldy", has been brought back to life (again) and Fennec, Ildana, and Benjil had a front-row seat. To make matters worse, Alias and Dragonbait- previously freed from their own tattoos- are now utterly under Moander's thrall. Ancient lore states that if Moander is not defeated "the right way", his form will overtake the entire realm. So what are our heroes going to do? I guess you'll have to listen to find out!

Real talk for a moment: this session was terrifying to run. (Even while editing it, knowing how it ends, I kept asking myself, "How TF are they going to survive this?") It's not easy statting out a god (even a newborn one), but I think I did a pretty good job, and I'm really happy with the result. I hope you all are happy listening to it!

With the release of this episode, though, I am reminded that we are nearing the end. There's one more episode in this story arc after this one, and then the home stretch. And then it's over. I've been working on this show for about three and a half years at this point, and the fact that most of it is already out to the public still hasn't quite hit me. I'll probably wake up in a cold sweat sometime in like June wondering if I forgot to upload an episode or stressing over when I'm going to find time to edit- and then my wife will call me down, remind me that this is all behind me, and so on.

Anyway, I hope you're all having a good time out there, and be sure to check back next week for the end of this story arc!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 6, Episode 5 - You May Have Noticed A Theme For These Boss Episode Titles

We're back, everyone, with another action-packed episode! In this entry, the party has found themselves seemingly trapped by the power of their tattoos inside the temple of Moander, the Jawed God. With no way out but in, they find their way to the inner sanctum where the cult's high priestess is in the middle of a powerful new ritual- a ritual that needs blood. And one way or another, blood WILL be spilled.

I'm really happy with how this one turned out, and just you wait until you get to the ending! There ain't no getting offa this train we're on, so enjoy the ride!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 6, Episode 4 - I'm Not Crazy About "Family Trees" But It Works Well Enough

On this week's episode, our heroes are greeted by the familiar (but much older) face of Lak'hot Reinleaf, the evangelist for Moander that travelled with Amalessya so many years ago. Will he let the party continue on their way without an altercation? Will the party be able to just turn around and leave? Will Fennec create a fireball big enough? Find out for yourself in this week's episode!

I'm really happy with how this episode turned out, even if there were a lot of aspects of it that I completely biffed and forgot multiple times throughout. But that's how it is running a game like this, so I'm sure all of you will understand. There's still plenty of excitement and intrigue to come, though, so try and contain yourself over the next few weeks!

Thanks to everyone for listening and following along, as we near the home stretch. See you all next week!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 6, Episode 3 - The Boob Armor Is Canonically Justified

This week, the three heroes encounter Alias and Dragonbait, the two protagonists of the Azure Bonds novel and subjects of Clyde Caldwell's stunning cover art. Alias explains her story to the best of her ability, the party makes some assumptions about what's still to come, and they begin the treacherous journey down into the hidden temple of Moander- where a familiar face is waiting for their arrival. What will come of this venture? Find out next time!

This was a fun episode, though admittedly it's largely a huge lore dump. I had seriously been waiting for the party to come and meet Alias and Dragonbait since the start of the campaign (they could have come here as early as the second chapter, but I guess it just wasn't in the cards) so it was great to finally get here. And I'm really happy with how this episode (and the rest of this story arc) turned out! Hopefully you all will be too!

Thanks to everyone for following along, and catch you next week!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 6, Episode 2 - Lore Never Changes

In this week's episode, the party hitches a ride to Hillsfar, in the hopes of requesting aid and safe passage through Yulash to find the cult of Moander hidden there. (In case you forgot, this is a follow-up to a suggestion one of the players made ALMOST A YEAR AGO, way back in the first arc of the campaign.) But when they get there- what's this? The city is under new management? And the new management is a racist pile of refuse? That can't be good!

I really think this is an interesting episode because without spoilers, we as a group took a short break and talked about campaign expectations and goals in the middle of the episode. I really considered cutting a lot of that during editing but in the end I decided to leave it in because this sort of thing can be a learning experience for listeners as much as it was a learning experience for us as the players. Sometimes, you need to set the game aside for a few minutes and figure out what everyone wants out of the game!

And another quick reminder: if you want to listen to the two-part bonus "Beach Episode", the second part goes live on our Patreon today! It's a ton of fun and you can get it (as well as all of our other bonus content) for one measly dollar. What's not to like about that?

Curse of Radiance Chapter 6, Episode 1 - It Has Been So, So Long

We're back in the present, finally! All except Torunn, that is- somehow, the dwarven fighter has been replaced (or swapped, or something) with Benjil Turcott, the halfling mercenary that stole the blade of Lathander- and then, supposedly, died two years ago. As the party copes with the loss of one ally, and the fact that Benjil seems to have been cursed with the Azure Bonds as well, they plan their next move- which means travelling to an unwelcome city and asking for help.

I'm overjoyed to finally be at this point in the story, and in fact I'm so overjoyed, that I have a special announcement! Have you heard we have a Patreon? You have now! This week and next, everyone on our $1 tier will get a two-part bonus episode that we recorded with Freeman a little while back, to get him up to speed and acclimated to the group. They're a ton of fun, and along with them, joining our campaign also gets you a ton of outtakes and other cool stuff! I highly recommend you go check it out.

Curse of Radiance Chapter 5, Episode 7 - That's A Lot of Gods

In this week's episode, the three cultists- Amalessya, Lak'hot, and Entro- have come face-to-face with the guardian of the source of Verishanta Monastery's mystical power. And that guardian, it seems, is not just a dragon- it's one of the Eight Million Gods of Kara-Tur. (And of course, it isn't going to give up its charge quite so easily.) So assuming the three of them can defy one god... if they're successful, will Amalessya be able to defy a second? Find out in this episode, the last episode of the Legend Lore chapter!

It's the end of the year, and I have been BUSY! I've got about a week off from work so I've been sitting at the editing machine trying to get the last few episodes of this show edited. I've gotten most of it done so far (a few of these episodes have been a slog and a half- we got really sloppy on our last few recordings) so mostly I have a bunch of re-records and such to do before this is all done. But the end is in sight, and with any luck, I'll have a day or two before the end of this break where I can sit and play video games without feeling like I have this responsibility looming over my head. I'm so excited.

Anyway, I hope you all had a wonderful winter holiday, and I hope you're all staying safe and warm out there! The year is using its last ounce of strength to try and get me sick again (my wife is currently under the weather and we aren't sure if it's something I already had or not) so I hope you're all in a better position than me.

Have a great week, and I will see you all in 2026 (hopefully in a better spot than we all are now)!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 5, Episode 6 - All Elves Are Created Equal, But Some Elves Are More Equal Than Others

Before I get into the post, let me just wish a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday to everyone out there! I really hope you're all staying safe, staying warm, and staying healthy out there. It's been one hell of a month so far- I got Covid a couple weeks ago, and then immediately after that was done I caught Swine Flu- and this is after at least a couple weeks of all sorts of things going wrong for me, with the biting freezing cold on top of it all. So seriously, I want you all to stay safe and careful out there. Take care of yourselves. Whatever it is you think you're hustling for, it'll get along just fine if you take care of yourself first.

With that said, welcome to this week's episode! Much like children getting what they want during the holiday season, this episode begins with Amalessya being allowed to make a wish at the Verishanta (the Living Tree). Will it come true? Was it even specific enough to be within the scope of this flashback? Keep listening and find out! But after the wish is made, we get some casual fantasy race talk, we get some sneaking around after-hours, and we get a fun tease for what will surely be an exciting session next week. This episode has it all!

Thanks so much to everyone for listening. This year has been such a rollercoaster for me, and a big part of that has been the fact that we've finally been able to release this show to the public. So if you're here, if you're listening, I want to give you a sincere thank you.

I hope you all have a great week, and I'll catch you next time, with our last episode of the year!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 5, Episode 5 - The Word I Was Looking For Was "Balneary"

In this week's episode, Amalessya, Lakhot, and Entro wake up the morning after they arrived at this mystical monastery off in the far east (and after Entro sabotaged their food supply) in search of a great power that Moander wishes them to steal. As they get to know the people and learn the goings-on in this cloister, this great power just might make itself known...

I don't have a ton else to say about this episode, so I'll take a moment and plug our Patreon! If you head over to Patreon.com/InterPartyConflict, for a measly $1 a month you can get a ton of outtakes from the show so far. (There have been a LOT during this story arc, and I've been trying to include context so Patrons have an idea of what sort of stuff was going on behind the scenes.) And technically, if you wanted you could join for one month, download all the stuff that's on there, and then dip out (I'm not a cop, do what you want) but I should let you know, next month there's going to be something big going out exclusively on the Patreon, so you might want to stick around until then!

Anyway, thanks to everyone for listening, and I hope you enjoy what we still have in store!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 5, Episode 4 - Cultists and Cane Toads and Monks, Oh My!

And here we are, beginning the third and final flashback of the Legend Lore arc! Ildana experiences the memories of Amalessya, an elven cultist of Moander (who isn't actually a cultist of Moander) traveling with a side salad and decaying brunch at the behest of the Jawed God himself, on a mission to steal a source of great power from an ancient monastery in the far-off eastern nation of Wa. What significance will this monastery pose in the future? Keep listening and find out!

This flashback was a lot of fun to make, and underwent quite a few drastically different iterations in the planning phase. (Fun fact: if Jay hadn't left when he did, this segment would have been utterly unrecognizable from what we got. His departure left us with a lot of time to retool some things that we were all planning, and Chris did a lot of work that led to this flashback becoming what it was, and it will have long-lasting effects on the campaign moving forward!) While I think this flashback as a whole could have been tightened up a little bit, I'm extremely pleased with how it turned out!

I really hope you all enjoy this story arc, and I hope you continue to enjoy what comes after!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 5, Episode 3 - Mired in Quicksand (Literally and Figuratively)

The exciting conclusion of the second Legend Lore flashback! Benjil Turcott, gnome mercenary, has just gotten done killing a guardian of Lathander's temple so he and his band can plunder the holy relics for the Zhentarim. However, one of the relics speaks to him- a sword with a ruby-quartz blade- and begs him not to go through with this job. There is much at play in this story, says the sword, and Benjil has an important role to play as well. Will this request- as well as the urging of an old friend- be enough to turn Benjil from completing his end of the deal? And if he decides to go through with it... can the Black Network even be trusted not to betray him?

I really like this episode. It was difficult to make- there were a lot of logistics going on behind-the-scenes that made this one a unique challenge- but after editing out all of the difficult bits I think the end product is fantastic. This is also an example of the kind of games we had to play with the existing canon of the Forgotten Realms- as much as possible I wanted to adhere to and involve the lore that existed, but in so many cases there's so little to go off of that I really had to stretch what little I could find. But, like I said, I'm happy with the result!

I hope you all enjoy the episode, and next week, tune back in for the last (and longest) of the Legend Lore flashbacks!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 5, Episode 2 - The Halfling, Benjil Turcott

We're back, with another episode of the Legend Lore story arc! This flashback will be a bit meatier than the last, so stay tuned.

In this week's episode, Torunn experiences the life of a halfling mercenary named Benjil Turcott, who has been hired to explore the ruined city of Teshwave with the other members of his troupe, the Steel Lions, to find a lost relic of the god Lathander. But in order to get to it, they need to traverse a dungeon full of deadly- and vaguely familiar- traps and hazards...

This episode was a lot of fun to make, and once again allowed Freeman some time to acclimate himself to the campaign before we get back into the main timeline. So I hope you all enjoy listening to it!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 5, Episode 1 - A New Beginning

Everyone, gather 'round! We have some big changes to talk about.

First, the episode itself. In this week's episode, the three heroes have undergone a ritual that will give them information about the artifacts they've been collecting (two down, one to go) that will help them rid themselves of the cursed azure bonds. Fennec has felt his mind be catapulted through time and space, waking up as an elven soldier- one of the N'Vaelahr, the elite shadow soldiers guarding Cormanthor- as he and his squad are sent on a mission of utmost importance: stop the warlord Abiros, whose magical helm gives dominion over dragonkind.

But much more importantly, our roster has undergone a big change! As of this week, Jay has bowed out of the podcast, leaving big shoes in his wake. But one man was up to the challenge- and fill those shoes he did! We are joined by the inimitable Freeman Iceton, host of such amazing podcasts as Encounter This! and Stemming the Tide, and one of the founders of the Uncharted North Podcast Network, which graciously welcomed Curse of Radiance into their ranks before we even began. (Fun fact: Freeman actually suggested the name "Curse of Radiance"!) Freeman is a fantastic roleplayer and just an all-around great guy, and as sad as I was to see Jay leave, we couldn't have replaced him with a better person. I am confident you all will love the last few arcs of this podcast even more than the first few.

So, a huge thanks to Freeman for helping us out, and I hope you all check out his other works as well!

Curse of Radiance Chapter 4, Episode 7 - The End of an Era

One more tattoo down, one more legendary artifact up!

In this week's episode, the party has killed Fzoul Chembryl and found the Blade of Lathander, a sword forged to kill the possessing spirit, Tyranthraxus. (They also freed a bunch of slaves, incited some riots, met a famous adventuring party, yadda yadda yadda.) To figure out where to go and what to do next, they got some help from their old friends back in Phlan- after some magical testing and some speaking with the spirits of various magic weapons, they're going to attempt a ritual to get some information about these artifacts they've been gathering. Surely that'll go smoothly, right?

This is a bit of a bittersweet episode, for reasons that will probably become apparent next week. (The next story arc is going to be different, in a lot of ways.) There were also various parts of this episode that I went back and forth on as far as editing goes, with some changes being made to the episode as recently as two days ago (despite being recorded in the middle of last year)! But I am very happy with the end result, and I hope you are too.

That's pretty much all I have to say about this episode; next week, though, you better strap in.

Curse of Radiance Chapter 4, Episode 6 - Behold! My Stuff!

Just what you wanted- another episode of mostly combat!

In this episode, the party has slain the High Inquisitor of Bane, just in time for Fzoul Chembryl to show up. But he isn't here to fight- not necessarily- because he knows the Inquisitor's pet beholder, Orox, is on its way, and it has been given instructions to kill everyone. So the party can either work with Fzoul to come up with a plan to escape the many eyes of this ommathur, or they can finish getting their revenge and likely die in the process. Decisions, decisions!

This was a tricky session to plan for, because as I've said several times in the past few episodes, I legitimately didn't know what the party was going to do! So I had to have at least some semblance of a plan for if the party worked with Fzoul, if they killed Fzoul on sight, if they tried to bargain with Orox, if they ran away... on and on it goes. (I alluded to it last blog post but I had been banking on the idea the party would lose the fight against Ginali and they would wake up in a jail cell, stripped of their belongings, and they would have to break their way out of prison. But alas, it did not happen.) I'm pretty happy with what we got, but like every good campaign, there's a million alternate universes where things went differently!

Also, fun fact: this episode marks the third time Ildana has gotten the blessing of a deity in this campaign! Will it be the last? Keep listening and find out!
